A new combined selling venture aimed at harnessing renewed demand for Santa Gertrudis genetics in Western Australia has made a confident debut, with the inaugural Santa Gertrudis Breeders Combined WA Bull Sale attracting strong buying support from new and seasoned Santa Gertrudis beef producers.

Showcasing Santa Gertrudis cattle for what they do best – superior weight gain, feed efficiency and consistent meat quality produced under tough conditions – the new sale on Thursday, April 23 at Bundarra, Dandaragan, saw four vendors meet the market with quality, industry-relevant bulls.

The sale topper was Cundarra V008 at $11,500, a 24‑month‑old Rosevale Jackeroo P294 (P) son out of a Greenup Eidsvold Station dam.

Bred by Mark and Chloe Madew, Cundarra Santa Gertrudis stud, Regans Ford, the bull was purchased by Stuart Blair, Sunblade Holdings, Gascoyne–Pilbara.

A long‑time believer in the breed, Mr Blair has run a straight Santa Gertrudis herd for more than 35 years, targeting the heavy feeder steer and heifer market.

Using a full EBV panel to guide his selection, he remains convinced of the breed’s proven ability to consistently grade well and perform strongly under MSA.

The heterozygous poll bull will head to Mr Blair’s Bolgart operation to breed quality bulls capable of producing sturdy, growthy calves for his northern country.

Buying with scale and resilience in mind was Jason Fisher, Yalbalgo Station, Carnarvon, who secured 10 bulls to service his 300‑strong Droughtmaster female herd.

Seeking structure and durability, Mr Fisher bought across the catalogue, selecting bulls from Wendalla (Wendy Gould, Bolgart), Morialta (Stephen and Donna Gentle, Boyup Brook), 3 Sons Santa Gertrudis (Matt and Mel Leeds from the host property) and Cundarra.

Mr Fisher also secured the second top-price bull, Cundarra Vibrator V040 (PP), a Rosevale Noah S194 (P) son out of Cundarra Razzmatazz (P) for $11,000.

Also active on the buying panel was Weldon Percy, Sylvania Station, who purchased nine bulls – three each from 3 Sons, Wendalla, and Morialta.

Agents: Elders (Moora), interfaced on AuctionsPlus with auctioneer Nathan King calling the bids.
