A new buyer from the Hawkesbury region of outer western Sydney has paid the top money of $50,000 for a 22-month-old, dark coated Watasanta – Santa Gertrudis bull in Tamworth, one of several NSW buyers exhibiting an enlarged appetite for Santa Gertrudis genetics in their stud and commercial operations.
Relatively unknown in beef circles, Quigley Pastoral Co led spirited bidding on Watasanta Vice President 3312 (PP), a Glenn Oaks Sterling son out of a decorated Watasanta cow selling at lot 10.
The highest price paid for a Santa Gertrudis bull so far this year was among a string of highlights for vendor Neil Watson and family, who saw their entire catalogue of 39 Santa Gertrudis bulls cleared at an average of $14,051, a $3832 increase on the average price posted last year at the Watasanta selling complex.
The sale’s volume buyer was Watasanta repeat client, David Caslick, Inglewood Wallabadah Pastoral Co, NSW who compiled a draft of 8 bulls at an average of $9750.
Neil later posted on his own Facebook page that he and his family “couldn’t be happier with the result”.
The second top purchase of $35,000 was paid by Santa Gertrudis stud breeder, Scott Dunlop, (pictured) Dunlop Santa Gertrudis, Proston, Qld for lot 19, Watasanta Viscount 3240 (P), a Glenn Oaks Ransom R38 (PP) son out of a powerful, highly fertile Watasanta cow.
The third top money was paid by Anvil Creek Santa Gertrudis stud, Mount Seaview, NSW, who outlaid $30,000 for lot 3 Watasanta Voicemail 3190 (AI) (PP), a Drensmaine Extol son.
Close behind were Queensland stud breeders, the Sargood family, Drensmaine Santa Gertrudis, who paid $28,000 for lot 22 Watasanta Veteran 3246 (PP) out of a Watasanta dam by Yarrawonga Cattle Co Iron Man (PP), the top selling bull in Australia in 2019.
NSW buyers investing heavily in Watasanta blood included Toby Anderson, Brookside Santa Gertrudis, Armidale; Clematis Pastoral Co, Guyra; Donoghue Farms, Gunnedah and Marra Creek Livestock & Co, Bourke.
Queensland buyers included Dale Stevenson, Quilpie, who assembled a draft of 7 head at an average of $8000; Blaine Sargood, Charleville, 4 head at an average of $7500; Scott Pegler, Eromanga, 2 head at an average of $10,000 and ES & CN Perrett, Wandoan, who invested $40,000 in three bulls.
Queensland Santa Gertrudis stud breeders NIOA Pastoral Co., Allora, represented at the auction by manager Shannon Gardner paid $22,000 for lot 1, Watasanta Visionary 3210 (PP), while Luke & Tanya Hoare Rose Oak Santa Gertrudis, Flagstone Creek, paid $18,000 for another Glenn Oaks Sterling son, Watasanta Vendor 3274 (PP) at lot 11.
A portion of the catalogue also included 19 registered PTIC females to classified bulls, which all sold to an average of $2750.
