The inaugural Elders Santa Gertrudis bull sale held at the Moura Saleyards on Thursday, October 30 marked the launch of a new selling outlet for emerging breeders in Central Queensland.
Five vendors presented a total of 44 bulls, with 19 selling to a top of $9000 and averaging $5526.
While the clearance rate reflected the early-stage nature of the sale, the event was seen as a valuable step in providing additional market access and exposure for newer breeders within the well-established Santa Gertrudis footprint in the region.
Topping the sale was Rosehill V159, a 22-month-old sire offered by John and Rosemaree McCarthy of Rosehill Santa Gertrudis, Hodgsonvale, Qld.
Sired by Wave Hill J14 and out of Rosehill Q90, the 835kg bull impressed with an eye muscle area of 138cm², fat depths of 10mm and 6mm, intramuscular fat of 4.4%, and a 35cm scrotal circumference. He was purchased by Dean Carseldine, Rockadolla, Theodore, Qld.
The second-highest price of $8000 was achieved by Spring Creek Viceroy V52, a 20-month-old scurred bull offered by Andrew and Angela Doering of Spring Creek Santa Gertrudis, Tansey, Qld.
By the $105,000 Canowindra Tennessee T148 and out of Spring Creek Nadia N505, the 678kg bull featured an EMA of 128cm², 7mm and 9mm fat depths, 3% IMF, and a 41cm scrotal circumference.
Conducting the sale as a platform to introduce their genetics to the market, the vendor lineup included seasoned breeders such as Rosehill and Spring Creek, as well as Craig Ross, Kemmis Creek, Nebo, Qld and Dennis Muller, Costaplenty, Biloela, Qld, alongside first-time vendor Jonathon Maskall, Homeleigh, Millmerran, Qld.
Commercial support was evident, with IM Grazing, Greenvale, Qld, purchasing six bulls at an average of $5333, and Calliope Cattle Co, Qld, securing four bulls at an average of $5000.
While the sale presented some early challenges, it laid the groundwork for what vendors hope will become a regular fixture on the Central Queensland sale calendar, offering a new avenue for breeders to connect with buyers and grow their presence in the region.
