The inaugural Drensmaine on-property bull sale hosted by father and son Len and Matt Sargood at Tambo on Saturday, October 18 cleared 100 per cent of the 62 bulls offered at an average of $11,565, with buyers paying to a top of $30,000.

Grossing $717,000, the sale saw consistent bidding through the depth of the catalogue from south-western, central-western and north-western Queensland commercial beef producers, although prominent Santa Gertrudis stud breeder Andrew Bassingthwaighte, Yarrawonga, Wallumbilla, Qld secured four head at an average of $18,500.

Among the draft he selected were the sale’s two second-top price bulls purchased for $22,000 apiece – Lot 2, Drensmaine Magnus (P), a Drensmaine G 191 (P) son and Lot 44, Drensmaine M 141 (PP), a son of Drensmaine I 146 (P).

The top price buyers were Peter and Pam Pullos, Killarney Park Grazing, Tambo, who bought Lot 5, Drensmaine Maverick (PP), a Drensmaine Javelin J 122 (PP) son, for $30,000.

The volume buyer was Chris Turnbull, manager of Landsdowne Pastoral Co, Tambo, who purchased eight head at an average of $12, 875.

Mr Turnbull said the Landsdowne purchase would see Drensmaine bulls join their Santa Gertrudis sire battery that is utilised over a Shorthorn breeder base, producing calves with slicker coats and the ability to gain weight more efficiently, particularly in tougher seasons.

Other producers assembling multiple lots included Wansey Downs, Charleville, 6 hd; Ben Lasker, Beechwood, Glenmorgan, 5 hd; David and Lynelle Nugent, Tambo Station Pastoral Co, 4 hd; John Lyons, Sandalwood Downs, St George and Craigs Pocket Station, Mt Garnet, 3 hd apiece.

Robyn Sargood, Manresa Santa Gertrudis stud, Augathella bought 2 head at an average of $14,500.
